Israeli soldier seriously injured by cross-border fire from Lebanon

One Israeli soldier was severely injured and two others hurt in attacks launched from Lebanon on Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The areas of Kiryat Shmona, Biranit, and Mount Hermon in northern Israel were hit.

In response, Israeli combat jets conducted retaliatory strikes on positions held by Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah militia, including “terror infrastructure and a military compound,’’ the IDF said.

Israel also said it fired artillery rounds on the source of the attacks from Lebanon.

Lebanese security sources said that there was heavy Israeli artillery fire on villages in southern Lebanon, not far from Kiryat Shmona on the other side of the border.

Lebanese media reports said earlier that one person was killed and two others injured in an Israeli attack in the Lebanese border town of Khiam on Wednesday.

Tensions have been high along the border since war erupted months ago between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

According to Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas, 185 of its fighters have been killed since Oct. 7.

According to the Israeli military, 10 of its soldiers have died in the violence on the northern border.

Civilians have also been killed on both sides. (dpa/NAN)
