A Coalition of over 150 Pan-American organisations has called on the African Union (AU) to reject the Israel’s application for an Observer Status in the union.
Ms Ann Lorna, the Communications and Media Lead, Africans Rising, a Pan-African Movement said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
“We have sent a to the letter to AU on the issue and the letter will act as a tool to pressure the government of Israel to amend its approach in Gaza in line with provisional measures outlined by the ICJ ruling.
“The letter has already been sent to all the member states in the African Union (AU), including the AU Chairperson, Moussa Faki and the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole,” she said.
The 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) is holding from Feb. 16 to Feb. 20
in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.
The summit has the theme: “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, life long, quality, and relevant learning in Africa”
African heads of state and government, political leaders, and senior policy makers will discuss how the continent can maintain momentum in addressing peace and security issues.
They will also discuss regional integration, education, and development.
The sessions will consider, among other things, progress on the AU Kagame reforms, implementation of the AU Agenda 2063, the state of peace and security report, and the climate change committee report.
The three-day event is being hosted in Addis Ababa by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat.
It is expected to strengthen collaboration between political leaders and address the worrying security situation and conflicts in a few of its member states.
It is also expected to proffer recommendations on innovative ways to manage the crises sustainably in a bid to return to peace.(NAN)
