Death toll in Kenya flooding rises to at least 120 – Minister

The death toll in weeks of flooding in Kenya in eastern Africa has risen to at least 120, Interior Minister Raymond Omollo said on Tuesday.

People from almost 90,000 households have fled the flood waters and are being accommodated in 120 makeshift camps, Omollo added.

He did not provide any information about the total number of people affected.

The floods are a result of persistent rain associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon.

As a consequence of the natural disaster, officials have pledged to develop an early warning system.

The country had previously struggled with drought.

Heavy rain has also been falling in neighbouring Somalia.

According to the United Nations, many deaths have been reported and a large number of people have fled their villages and towns to escape the floods. (dpa/NAN)
