Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, rued the expulsion of teenage Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun after she was sent off in added time of their opening game against Canada.
The 19-year-old initially got a yellow card for her tackle on Ashley Lawrence but after VAR review, Abiodun got her marching orders as her studs hit Lawrence’s shin.
Coach Waldrum has expressed his disappointment at her absence for their next game against co-hosts Australia as she had been almost unplayable for most of the game.
“Deborah is out of our next match but she was outstanding,” Waldrum said.
While the Rivers Angels midfielder will be absent from the next tie, the Falcons will be boosted by the return of Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde who finished serving their two-game bans by sitting out the Canada clash.
Abiodun took to her Twitter page after the game to express her gratitude for the chance to debut at the World Cup.
“It’s a dream come true to start in my first senior Women’s World Cup match. I’m happy and honoured by the privilege. A bit disappointed my debut ended the way it did. I’m sorry. Overall, I’m grateful for the chance and proud of my team today. Thanks for your support always,” the midfielder said.
Deborah’s debut showcased her potential as a valuable asset to the Nigerian national team. Her skills and determination did not go unnoticed by fans and fellow players, who praised her performance in the midfield.
