No group can fault Gov Umahi on road construction in Nigeria – Ebonyi Govt

By Samuel Ugbor, Abakaliki

Ebonyi State Government, on Tuesday, said no group or individual could fault Governor David Umahi, on road construction across the country.

This is even as the State Government told the people of Ezzagu community, in the Ishielu Local Government Area of the state said it was poised to completing the road leading to the community, before the end of its administration.

The people of the area had bitterly lamented that they had been neglected by the government, which they claimed left them without social amenities in the area.

But the government said it had started constructing the road leading to the area to ensure goods and services moved to and from the community, unhindered.

The Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr Ogbonnaya Obasi and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Francis Nwaze, stated this during a joint press conference, in Abakaliki, on Tuesday.

The government also said it was reconstructing the general hospital in the area, which according to it, would be ready in the next seven days, to ensure the health challenges of the natives were tackled.

It urged the people to be patient with it, adding that the road connecting the community was  initially awarded  to a contractor and was terminated, following slow pace of work.

Obasi, who explained that the road was reawarded to another contractor on February this year, said the contractor had done 10km of the first phase, remaining 5km of the phase to be completed.

Obasi said, “The road cuts across Ntezi-Ohofia-Agba to Ezzagu and it’s about 35 kilometers that were constructed during the regime of Sam Egwu. That road was awarded on contract, to be done on asphalt and it was done up to Isu. It’s also on record that the Agba-Eguho-Ezzagu road was also awared on contract by the immediate past regime of Chief Martin Elechi, including one of the Unity Bridges.

“The road was completed, but the bridge was still there, because it wasn’t completed, until when His Excellency, Governor David Umahi, came on board and completed the bridge.

“So we can say for sure that from the Ohofia-Agba Hospital to Ezzagu is a good motorable road. What we are talking about is asphalt construction and for the fact that Ntezi to Agba and to Isu has gone bad, His Excellency, the Governor took it upon himself to awared that road on contract. For now, about 10 kilometers of that road have been completed on rigid pavement and work is still ongoing.
