The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Olanrewaju Tejuosho, has said that the institution will, on Friday, October 7, 2022, announce its new substantive vice chancellor, who will take over from outgoing Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
Ogundipe, the 12th substantive VC and a professor of Botany, is billed to end his five-year single term tenure as VC on November 11, 2022.
Tejuoso dropped the hint at an event to kick-start the 60th anniversary of the university held at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Lagos.
The Guardian gathered that out of eight professors that submitted applications, seven were shortlisted by the council last week.
Tejuoso has assured of a level-playing field for all candidates, saying as a proud alumnus, he would ensure that the new peaceful atmosphere on the campus is sustained.
He said the selection process was democratic and had been fair, thorough and transparent and that whoever emerges eventually is the choice of God Almighty and not that of man.
Earlier at the event, Ogundipe commended the management of the university for stan
ding by him in actualising his ambition for the institution.
He noted that at 60, the population of the students that used to be 150 in 1965 is now 62,000 in totality. He said that despite the ongoing strike in public institutions, the school had been running international programmes for over 200 students across Africa.
Ogundipe also said that under this tenure, lecturers had been able to win over N19 billion research grants for the university.
He, therefore, thanked the alumni of the university for their concerted efforts in always helping the institution in little ways they can, saying: “Our alumni at UNILAG have contributed a lot to the university in terms of manpower, research and infrastructural development, among others.”(The Guardian)
