RTEAN vows to sanction erring commercial drivers

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Bauchi state chapter has vowed to sanction its members for reckless and dangerous driving.

Malam Abdullahi Mohammed, the Chairman of RTEAN gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bauchi.

He said the association had put in place mechanism and measures to provide intelligence information on recklessness and dangerous driving on the highway.

The chairman said the association would not hesitate to sanction drivers found wanting for a period, depending on the magnitude of the offence.

Mohammed noted that reckless driving fell below the minimum standard expected of a careful driver.

“Dangerous driving includes behaviours that could potentially endanger yourself or other drivers. If you drive in a careless or dangerous way, you risk prosecution,” he said.

Mohammmed urged drivers to avoid speeding and overloading, especially during festive periods and ember months.

“We have already set up a speed limit for drivers traveling out of the state to always maintain the normal 110 to 120 speed limits to ensure a safe journey,” he said.

He said the association had also partnered with stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Vehicles Inspection Officers (VIOs) and other relevant agencies to minimise road crashes on the highways.

He appealed to the drivers to drive with care and avoid the use of drugs while embarking on their journeys.

The chairman said the association at the national level had initiated an insurance programme for drivers and passengers to cover them in terms of injuries and even death. (NAN)
