Nigeria to expand bilateral relations with Greece

The Nigeria Ambassador to Greece, Mrs Opunimi Akinkugbe, has promised to expand the bilateral ties between both countries in maritime, tourism, education and security sectors.

The envoy told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone in Abuja on Friday that her appointment as a substantive Ambassador to Hellenic Republic by President Muhammadu Buhari followed several years without an Ambassador in Greece.

She said that the appointment underscores the interest of Nigerian Government in taking the level of relationship between both countries to the highest level.

“I commented on the existence of long-standing Nigeria-Greece relations, a number of Greek related businesses have been established in Nigeria for decades that continue to thrive and create thousands of jobs, such as Leventis, Mandilas, NBC, Flour Mills, PZ, among others.

“My mandate as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is therefore to expand the already existing cordial relationship between both countries, particularly in areas of Maritime, tourism, education, security, and others,” she said.

The envoy, therefore, congratulated President Katerina Sakellaropoulou as the first Female President of the Hellenic Republic.

NAN reports that Akinkugbe was confirmed an ambassador representing Ondo state in July 2020.

On June 16, she was received by President Sakellaropoulou for the presentation of her Letters of Credence at the Presidential Mansion in Greece. (NAN)
