The Federal Government would embark on the realignment of about 11.5km of dangerous bends along Birnin Kudu highway in Jigawa to prevent further loss of lives on the road.
Mr Babangida Usaini, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, disclosed this shortly after inspecting the 11.5km killer spots on the Birnin Kudu highway on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the road, which has many shaped bends, has caused the death of more than 20 people within a month and claimed hundreds of lives over the years.
The permanent secretary, who was accompanied by Federal Controllers of Works in Kano and Jigawa States, among many others, said that the federal government was out to bring an end to sad development.
He expressed the federal government’s readiness to act quickly on the complaints raised by many prominent Nigerians, including federal lawmakers and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the affected segments of road which exposed travelers to serious danger.
Usaini said that he was on the inspection tour of the road with teeming engineers and surveyors to come out with a design and an estimate for the execution of the project.
The permanent secretary said that before embarking on the project, the ministry would enumerate farmlands likely to be affected in the realignment project for possible compensation where appropriate.
Usaini also that as soon as the report and the design were made available, the ministry would act quickly on it and forward it to the appropriate quarter for necessary action.
He said that he could not immediately say when the project would commence but assured members of the public that the ministry would make it a priority project. (NAN)
