Six Nigerians are serving jail sentences in the United Arab Emirates for allegedly helping to fund the militant Islamist group Boko Haram, Nigeria’s Daily Trust newspaper reports
.Over the past decade Boko Haram have launched attacks across north-east Nigeria, kidnapped thousands of people and at one time held large amounts of territory.
The six men were convicted in 2019 but the Daily Trust says details have just come to light. It quotes a court judgment saying that in 2015 and 2016 the men were involved in the transfer of cash to the militants amounting to $782,000 (£595,000) The newspaper has spoken to the men’s families who said they were doing legitimate foreign exchange business and that they were framed.
