WTO Final Consultation: Okonjo-Iweala Meets Buhari

As the campaign for Director-General of the World Trade Organisation enters into the final week, Nigeria’s candidate Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala today met President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja for final consultations.

Okonjo-Iweala who arrived yesterday briefed the President on progress made so far especially with regard to the backing of the European Union and other influential bodies who have come out in her support.

She also requested for intensified outreach to other Heads of Government and international organizations in order to maximize the positive momentum towards victory.

The former Finance Minister thanked the President, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Investment as well as Nigerians for their enthusiastic support and prayers.

Responding, President Buhari expressed his joy that the campaign which he described as Nigerian project has reached this significant stage and urged the candidate to continue to give her all until victory is achieved.

He described Dr Okonjo-Iweala as a worthy ambassador of the country who deserves the support of Nigerians.  President Buhari pledged that his administration will deploy every available diplomatic resource to ensure that Dr Okonjo-Iweala emerges as the head of the important international body.
