The Northern Youth Economic Growth Group (NYEGG) has frowned at what it described as the continuous insensitivity of satellite TV providers, DSTV. The youths said that satellite TV is exploiting Nigerians and raking in billions monthly at the expense of the country’s economy.
The group expressed this in a statement jointly signed by its National President, Comrade Ibrahim Adamu and its National Secretary, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, made available to DAILY POST in Kaduna on Thursday, June 6, 2019. “We have been studying the economic implications of DSTV’s operations in Nigeria and are worried that it is not in the interest of individuals or the national economy.
“The charges besides being exorbitant on monthly basis, puts a burden on our foreign exchange as the South African based company has not been able to come out clear with what it does with the billions it makes from the country monthly,” they said. They said from information gathered, DSTV charges as much as N5,400 for 29 channels and for their Premium, subscribers pay as much as N15,800 monthly, which they described as ‘wicked’. The group said that they are not against the company but are worried that only a few Nigerians are employed by the firm with the North not benefitting from such, in spite of the huge profit they make in the country and the North.
“We would have been praising the company if it uses a portion of the profit it makes in developing sectors like agriculture, which will translate to many jobs,” they stressed. The group called on the Nigerian government to come up with laws, preventing DSTV and other investors from moving profits out of the country, if none exists presently.
They also advised Nigerians to find a local alternative that would provide cheaper services and help the economy.
