Movements in prices of cooking gas divergent as average petrol price drops

The National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) has reported a mixed development in average prices of Liquified Petroleum Gas, LPG, across the country but a decline in average price of premium motor spirit (petrol) in its survey for the month of February 2019 released yesterday. Gas Cooking Gas The Bureau, in its latest report on the prices of LPG, popularly known as cooking gas, stated that the average price for refilling of a 5kg cylinder, increased by 1.37 percent month-on-month (MoM) to N2, 067.68 in February 2019 from N2, 039.82 in January 2019, while average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for cooking gas decreased by -0.77 percent.

A breakdown on the prices across various states shows that the highest average price for refilling of a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas were recorded in Bauchi, Cross River, Adamawa/Borno, which sold at N2,500, N2,450, and N2,400, respectively. Though the actual cause of the increase in February was not revealed, there were indications however that the development was as a result of the inability of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to import more product within the period. NBS also noted that states with the lowest average price for refilling of a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas were Osun (N1,811.11), Kaduna (N1,725.00) and Enugu (N1,680.00). However, average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for cooking gas decreased by -0.77 percent MoM to N4, 244.91 in February 2019 from N4, 277.86 in January 2019.

The report further stated: “States with the highest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas were Akwa Ibom (N4,700.00), Abia (N4,688.89) and Cross River (N4,759.09). States with the lowest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder of Cooking Gas were Oyo (N3,805.88), Ogun (N3,835.71) and Kano (N3,775.00.”

On petrol, NBS said: “Average price paid by consumers for premium motor spirit (petrol) decreased -0.3 percent MoM to N145.30 in February 2019 from N145.70 in January 2019 “States with the highest average price of premium motor spirit (petrol) were Oyo (N146.50), Plateau (N146.55) and Taraba (N150.55). States with the lowest average price of premium motor spirit (petrol) were Ogun (N143.06), Imo (N143.18) and Ekiti (N143.47).” Vanguard
