30% broadband penetration by 2018 achievable says NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to achieving the 30 percent approved National Broadband Implementation Plan by 2018.

Prof Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) made the disclosure in Ibadan on Wednesday during the Nigeria Digital Innovation Conference held at the Polytechnic Ibadan hall.

The conference was‎ sponsored by the Centre for Cyber Awareness and Development (CECAD) in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Communication and NCC with the theme; ‘Building a New Nigeria in Digital Economy:  Policy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship’.

Danbatta, who was represented by Mr Reuben Muoka, Head of Public Affairs, NCC, said the efforts were part of the 8-point agenda conceptualised alongside the aspiration of government for comprehensive economic growth.

He stated that Nigeria’s broadband penetration as empirically adjudged by the global telecom regulator, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) was 21 percent in 2017, adding that their efforts was yielding results.

Mr Gbenga Sesan, Executive Director, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN) stated that lack of commitment to innovative ideas accounted for the 56 percent unemployment rate in the country.

Mr Sunday Afolayan, President, Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) said the association was committed to ensuring that the identity and investment of Nigerians were maintained and protected.

He also said the association would ensure that Nigerians participates favourably in the digital space. (Daily Trust)
