Why Liverpool will not win the Premier League this season

Liverpool go into 2019 seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, having conceded just eight league goals this season, while playing some of the best soccer in Europe. It is quite understandable to see why they have usurped Thursday’s opponents, Manchester City, as the favorites to win the league.

But, ahead of their huge clash with City on Thursday, there are plenty of reasons to suggest Liverpool’s long wait for a Premier League title will continue.  In the last decade, only two sides who were leading at Christmas failed to win the league—both were Liverpool. And on all but four occasions in Premier League history , the side who were leading at Christmas suffered a downturn in form and lower average points per match thereafter.

Liverpool are in a great position and are playing brilliant soccer, but a side that has struggled with title pressure in the Premier League era might just be one injury away from letting this lead slip.
